Weekend Update 8/29/10

Friday had ended nicely bringing in a full weekend set to commit to plenty o’ games, and let me tell you, plenty of gaming was done.

First on the list, Mafia 2 rolled out this week and I dug into that hard throughout the week and finally finished it off on Saturday. The game offers a pretty decent storyline that focus’s on a WW2 war hero of Italian descent and decides to join the Mafia when he gets back home to a fictional New York city, or Empire Bay. Alot of Mafia-esque related material was taken from influential Mafia or mob movies but being that I have only seen a few, I couldnt really recognize any big moments in the game that were pulled from a movie or sitcom series. The game wraps things up nicely hitting a key note on the ending of the first game. One thing that I should probably note is that the game is very linear for being an open world game. It kinda feels like the open world was just supposed to serve the purpose of setting the theme and tone for the story, although you can do your standard GTA fare it’s not presented directly to you, and, well, there simply just isn’t enough for you to do besides the main storyline missions.

I followed that up with some Worms: Reloaded which is pretty much just Worms. Theres bazookas, grenades, bananas, and bats. Something probably worth more weight is the new Arma 2: British Armed Forces DLC which came out this weekend. It adds the British Army into Takistan along with their L85 variants and new vehicles and choppers. I played through the British campaign (4 missions) and although it was fairly short, it definitely played well and I think it is more polished than the original stuff that comes with the campaign. Also, you get to hear British dudes gap on the comms so it’s a nice change of atmosphere after hearing alot of broken English. I kinda enjoyed playing through those missions so I plan on downloading some custom missions and giving those a go later on. Anyways that pretty much wraps up the weekend for me. As usual, check out the JTV channel for daily gaming goodness!

Shogun 2: Total War Trailer

I bet this game is going to be as awesome as it looks, man, now that I remember it, I felt the same way when Empire: TW was announced. Anyways, this has real in-game footage, expect Samurai action to overflow from this game!

Starcraft 2-nizzle all up in my Hizzle, Foshizzle

After getting home from work today and popping in the Starcraft 2 disc, I instantly felt a weird sense of nostalgia when the autorun prompt came up. I had played a little of the MP beta but today would be my real re-entry into the world of Starcraft. The game at it’s core is as Starcraft as you remember it. With that said, there are some substantial changes to some of the units, techs, and buildings, but overall it’s like playing a revamped edition of Starcraft, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s kinda weird how alot of RTS games have tried to re-invent their franchise by adding something drastic or trying to make a new game, whereas Blizzard was just like, “You liked Starcraft? Well here you go.”

It’s still very early and I haven’t even launched into an actual MP game but from the get go I am having a blast playing the campaign. Full VO’s, varied mission layouts, unlockable upgrades, and just the overall tone the game has for the singleplayer is well done. You can tell Blizz poured their hearts into this, just as expected. Oh yeah, I kinda forgot about how regular the $60 price tag feels nowadays until I picked up this game at Best Buy and was like, wait a minute, PC Games cost 60 bucks now? Damn. Oh well.

Call of Duty MMO?

It seem’s the big chief of ActiBlizzard Bobby Kotick is open to the idea of a Call of Duty themed MMO according to a recent interview with the Financial Times. He pretty much goes on boasting about how some 60% of Xbox Live subscribers are only subscribed because of Call of Duty Multiplayer and that how Activision doesn’t receive a single penny from that (boo-hoo?). So why hasn’t the huge super-mega publisher pushed out one of these yet? Here’s some key things that I think might be an issue:

1. Latency – First and foremost, for any shooter to be successful you need to be able to make it fun to shoot other people. You expect your bullet to hit whatever you are taking careful aim at within milliseconds after pulling the trigger. This results in having a good ping to whatever is handling the magic in the background, usually between 50-100ms ping (<50 is optimal and preferred amongst the hardcore FPS’ers out there). Making sure that your MMO meets this criteria over a large network presents a huge problem. Reaction times are a huge part of playing an FPS, and if your game can’t react within milliseconds of what you want it to do, then people are going to be pissed.

2. Market – There really isn’t a market for an MMO FPS. It’s not that we wouldn’t want a persistent online shooter, but there have been plenty of games that kind of build around not needing an actual 24/7 world in order to deliver that kind of experience. Leveling up is a big part of online shooters and unlocking extra talents and features is pretty much expected from any multiplayer FPS nowadays. So what else is there? Having unique worlds to explore through and shoot other people in? Shooting 10 rats and turning in their hides for a scope?

3. Balance – Alot of MMO’s strive for ultimate balance in their universe. Adjusting overpowered spells and abilities are easily done and patched in without too much of an issue. So how do you create a balanced setting for a game that relies mostly on a player’s reaction and how powerful their gun is? Are headshots still viable? Are AWPS gonna lay waste to the noobs trying to turn in quests? Can you nerf the guns just at the right level, and will the players be happy with what they have to use?

4. Need – Do we really want to play online with 1,000 of other players shooting away at eachother? We kinda play games to make us feel like we make a difference, like WE actually did something important or gratifying. Being in the first wave against an entrenched position only to die over and over again might make some players quit and play some MW2 where they can actually get a kill.

5. Patience – MMO’s require patience. MMO’s have large worlds that you usually have to traverse. You’ll need to go through a long leveling system in order to justify paying a monthly fee. There will be server downtime. Some portions of the game might be inaccessible for the current “you” and you’ll have to revisit at a later date. Solo play is not really the focus of playing an MMO so expect to spend some time looking for others to play with. Now can you imagine the majority of online FPS players going through this?

Now I’m not putting down an idea of playing an MMO FPS, these are just some of the issues I think about and why there really hasn’t been a successful one yet. I’ve tried one, WW2 Online or Battleground Europe is what I think it’s called now, and that was fun but the novelty wore off pretty quickly, the game suffered from poor latency issues, an old game engine, and very quick deaths after very long searching and waiting for the enemy. What do you guys think about this? Would you pay to play an MMO FPS? Feel free to leave comments!

Final Fantasy XIV COMING Sept. 22nd!

I’m going to let some of you guys know about our dirty little secret. Jason and I were huge FFXI nerds and played that game on and off since the game was released in the U.S. in 2003. We have bought at least 3 versions of the game, poured away countless nights, laughed and cried in the lands of Vana’diel, finally retiring our characters when FFXIV was announced last year (I made it to a respectable 70 Paladin while Jason did it proper and acheived max cap 75 Samurai). So it’s no surprise that we’re super excited about Squeenix’s new MMO coming out this year, yes they finally announced a release date of September 22nd (or 30th for regular editions).

What does this mean? Probably a whole lot of FFXIV streaming later this year. I’ll probably play other games from time to time, but I wouldn’t expect too much of anything else. If I can set it up properly, I might even see if we can combine streams of both of us playing. Anyways, there is kind of a weird release setup for this game, although if you kinda look at the recent MMO offerings, giving an advance head start for your MMO for a premium price isn’t exactly new. What can I say, the market kinda guides this sort of stuff, so…

Here are the details for the “Collector’s Edition” which is marked at $75 dorrars (regular is 50 bucks):

- Gear: Onion-Helm – Ok, an extra piece of gear to help us start grinding, I got ya

- Early access of 8 days ahead of regular edition buyers – Uhh, main reason why anyone would want to get this…

- Behind the scenes DVD – Cool, something I can watch while fishing up Moat carp

- Security Token – Thank god I never have to remember my password again, SE support was a bitch

- Physical bound journal for logging adventures – LOL stupid

- Right of Passage serial – Why for?

- Amano Cover boxart – Games still come in boxes?! WTF

All = A fooking new Final Fantasy MMO y’all.

Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead in your face!

For any of the mil-sim gamers out there that follow us, then you probably know about the Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead expansion that released today. For those that don’t, this expansion essentially takes Arma 2 to the desert closely resembling Afghanistan (called Takistan). The primary force you’ll be playing as a part of this time around is the good ol’ U.S. Army. Along with it comes additional new weapons, vehicles, and maps among better optimization for the game engine, more robust mission making, and probably some other stuff I forgot to mention. For anyone who’s interested in more realistic shooters and have patience, then by all means checkout the trailer. I’ll post my thoughts on it once I’ve gotten some more playtime in.

Weekly Wrap-up

Not much of a week for gaming but still had an awesome weekend. Fixed up a JTV collaboration level for LittleBigPlanet called “Kawaii Land”, played a mess of Napleon Total War and bought some stuff from the Steam Summer Sale.

For anyone who’s interested in the Peninsular Campaign for Napoleon: Total War, it’s essentially a small campaign that’s focuses on Napoleon’s venture into Spain. It somewhat resembles the smaller Italy campaign under France, you need to basically drive out the enemy while holding onto a specific region. I believe there are a few new units bundled in with this campaign as well if I’m not mistaken. It’s been pretty fun, especially since I rarely get a chance to play as Britain against France on land most of the time (I never make it onshore easily during the Grand Campaign). Expect plenty of land battles, minimal economy and civic handling, and lots of city sieging. Fun stuff.

Also, it looks like some new footage got posted up for Mafia II, a game that Jason and I are eagerly looking forward to this year:

Late nights

So after a save data transfer snafu I lost my progress on Bioshock, effectively killing my desire to finish that game. I must have gone through that intro at least 3 times so thinking about starting all over again makes me kinda want to throw a brick through my T.V. In other news, work has been crazy this week so I haven’t had much time for games but hopefully I’ll catch up on my TGIF session. I still need to download the free co-op DLC Rockstar put out for Red Dead Redemption and for some reason I picked up the new Peninsular Campaign DLC for Napoleon Total War since I started playing that game again.

Steam is also having a huge sale on alot of games so you might want to check that out. Well not too much to report on tonight, that’s all folks.

Remember when Tom Clancy meant Use your brain FPS?

As I read up more information on Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, I tend to cringe at the fact that strategic FPS games have long been gone, and how I miss them. I remember bumping into Rainbow Six at Walmart when I was maybe 13-14 and thinking “I can lead men in shootouts with bad guys? AWESOME!” Sure, the planning stage was pretty daunting for me at the time, but there was a special feeling about laying out a plan as a special ops unit and achieving a sense of satisfaction after watching your teams clear out an area you told them to.

Fast forward to 2010 and Tom Clancy pretty much sold his name to Ubisoft and that genre is pretty much dead. How cool would a strategic FPS made with todays technology and innovative ideas be? Instead we have stuff like Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (1&2), and Rainbow Six Lockdown/Vegas/Vegas 2. You would think at least one title would have some halfway decent planning and authentic weaponry like Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear, Ghost Recon, or even Ravenshield had. It makes you wonder, in the year 2060 will we have games that pretty much have one button and play themselves? Oh wait…

OnLive Thoughts

OnLive officially launches today for the masses. In case you haven’t heard, OnLive uses cloud-based computing to deliver games to your TV, PC, or Mac. The idea behind this is that owning a powerful gaming PC can be quite costly or if having a game console is simply not an option for you, you can tap into OnLive’s subscription based service and proceed to rent or “own” most of the popular titles out there via the internet. Although the idea of owning a single piece of hardware that can tap into all games, no matter the platform or performance, there’s of course alot of skepticism of gaming over a cloud network, not to mention the weird pricing they have in line for this thing.

It looks like alot of people are kinda wary of comitting to this thing, so OnLive recently gave out free 1-year subscriptions to all of those who pre-ordered and offered a renewal fee of only 4.95 a month (the regular pricing is 14.95 per month). This doesn’t include games, this is just the “entrance fee” to get onboard. You’ll then be able to rent or “purchase” games that are hosted through OnLive’s service. And what I mean by purchase is be able to play the game until your expiration date hits. That’s right, any games bought over OnLive will eventually expire, so you not only have to have the OnLive service in order to play them, you’ll eventually have to re-buy all of your games, granted some of them are a little cheaper to buy through OnLive, but not too drastic of a price difference.

Now maybe the reason I can’t get behind this is because I own a decent PC, all consoles, and I’m lucky enough to have a job, but this all sounds like crazy talk to me. I mean, if you’re gonna start an on-demand service over the internet, you might want to take a look at how Netflix rolls. I’m quite sure it’s a whole hell of a lot more different than playing movies, but when you’re shelling out 15 bucks a month just to browse a games list, doesn’t that sound a little too much, especially if you can pay 5 bucks to rent a game or go with Gamefly for nearly the same price? I sincerely hope this kind of tech pushes out even further as we get knee deep into it, but OnLive might as well be NoLive as far as I’m concerned.
