Today marks the first step towards something larger for the future of elephnat. I’ve always wanted to grow elephnat from a tight JTV community into, hopefully, a larger gaming community. So far, we have a dedicated Minecraft and Battlefield 3 server and a Mumble voip server setup but I plan on adding a Left 4 Dead server soon. I may add more servers in the future depending on what’s popular or asked for so keep an eye out for future updates. If you haven’t already, sign up for the forums/steam group!
BF3 – First Impressions
27 10 2011
Well, it’s finally here. I was lucky enough to have two days of Battlefield 3 to myself, and, well unlucky enough to have my wisdom teeth pulled the day after release, but that’s not what this post is about. In short, BF3 is awesome. The core game feels pretty solid despite the horrible matchmaking/origin service. It kind of reminds me of when I made the transition into BF2 from BF1942. The graphics were a huge jump, sound design was exceptionally better, ranks and unlocks were introduced, and the game just felt like a huge multiplayer fun bag you could easily jump into.
The multiplayer is the heart of this game, as is any Battlefield game is and should be. The maps are laid out very well, nice to look at, and support huge battles between 64 players better than BF2 did. Actually, I prefer the 64 player servers in this game as opposed to BF2 where 32 felt just about right. The guns are modeled nicely and shoot in a realistic manner, without feeling too sim-like but have enough recoil to them to prevent holding down the trigger. The vehicles add extra punch to the maps but don’t feel overwhelmingly powerful. Also, combining assault with medic was actually a good decision, and each class still feels distinct and has a specific role.
With that said, the singleplayer campaign is also a blast. It’s similar to the shooting gallery that CoD has defined over the years, but in an awesome Frostbite environment with excellent sound design. The story so far centers around a couple missing nukes and takes you to different locales doing different types of fighting so it’s always throwing something new in your face. I’m not finished with it yet but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve played so far and will continue to stream the rest until completion.
All in all, I forgive your horrible matchmaking/server browser service, confusing squad support, and lack of VOIP within servers, DICE. Now hurry up and release that Back to Karkand DLC!

Battlefield 3 is the Bees-Knees
22 10 2011The Battlefield series has always held a special place in my heart. Up until Battlefield 1942 came out, I never thought online FPS games could get any bigger or better than Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. Then I started to hear about BF ’42 circa 2002 and how there were different classes you could choose from, vehicles and planes you could pilot, and the huge, gorgeous maps that you played on. DICE did a good job making BF42 feel like a giant, action packed game. Now it’s 2011 and BF3 is less than 3 days away.
Plenty of time has passed since their last PC focused sequel, Battlefield 2, perhaps maybe too much time. I feel that many of the early Battlefield players stopped playing and/or caring after BF2. The Bad Company series came shortly after the Xbox 360 and PS3 were released, but even with the new destructible environments, the games still felt limited and tailored to a console environment (e.g. no prone, lack of large-pop servers, missing jets). In a market where FPS games seemed to have fallen back to tighter maps, easier shooting mechanics, and lack of vehicular combat, it’ll be interesting to see how well BF3 will be received. On the other hand, I’m sure that all of the Call of Duty players are starting to feel an itch to try something new by now. All I know is come Tuesday midnight, I will be blasting on sucka faces back on the streets of Karkand, it’s about damn time.

So many games, so little time…
25 10 2010It’s kind of weird how all these holiday releases have kinda snuck up on me. I have 4 games that I recently picked up and have not even come close to beating any of them. Part of this is due to work, being lazy, and the ever present guilt trip of not playing FFXIV to the max. I don’t even know where to start, but thanks to Steam’s awesome weekend sale, I picked up Batman: Arkham Asylum finally and have been playing mostly that. I don’t know, it’s hard for me to commit to one game lately but hopefully I’ll be able to knock at least some of these out before Christmas. Not so much a meaningful update, but an update nevertheless. As usual, you can catch me trudging through them on the JTV channel, until next time!

Server Woes
24 10 2010**Update – Minecraft Server is up, commence mining!**
It’s never a good thing when a PC goes down in my house. And it’s probably the worst thing when my server goes out, which it has over the course of the past week. So for the few people that found their way to my Minecraft server, I just wanted to let you know that I have a fairly recent backup of the world saved on my personal rig for the time being, and that I plan on fixing the server soon. It looks like a drive went out and the motherboard probably needs to be tossed as well since it’s been having issues for the past year. I guess it served me well for being on 24/7 for the past 3 years.
Thank goodness WHS duplicates files across all drives w/o mirror setup, otherwise I’d probably be freaking out. Anyways, I’ll post an update once it’s back up, sorry guys. As they say, shit happens.

Beards of Honor
17 10 2010Medal of Honor was among the cadre of FPS’s I played and loved back when the WW2 era was still fresh grounds for a game, so I was definitely interested in seeing the franchise’s first non-WW2 Medal of Honor. First off, I guess it’s important to note that the game development was split between two teams, Danger Close (EALA) for the Single Player portion and DICE for the Multi-player portion, resulting in both modes having their own distinctive look and feel. This is probably due to the fact that the game uses entirely separate game engines for each mode, Unreal Engine 3 for single player and the Frostbite engine for Multi-player, so I can see how someone can love one part of this game and totally dislike the other. Although I am glad to see another Medal of Honor release and I’m kinda interested to see where it goes from here, the whole experience just seemed kinda bland, kinda like how I felt about playing WW2 shooters in 2008. This is probably due to the fact that I didn’t really get into the single player’s campaign mode and the shallow multiplayer experience as well.
As I do with all my games, I dug hard into the singleplayer mode and finished it in under 5 hours, which is kinda short, but I enjoyed MW1 and 2′s singleplayer and both of those were fairly short as well. You play as an elite tier soldier in three different teams: the Navy Seals, Delta Force, and the US Rangers, all fighting against the Taliban right after the events of 9-11. I appreciate that they were trying to go for an “authentic” approach and all the technical military jargon amazes me but overall the story just felt like something you’d read about…err scratch that, something you’d totally expect special forces operatives to do. Kill Taliban dudes with heavy firepower and technically superior weapons. There just wasn’t anything to really grab onto during the singleplayer experience. With that said, it’s a fairly solid shooter. The audio was done really well and all weapons definitely sounded lethal with heavy bass and report. The levels were pretty much straightforward, although I gotta say, playing without any on-screen indication of where the next objective is or compass/mini-map kinda made it difficult to progress at times, especially if you weren’t paying attention to what someone was telling you to do.
The multi-player game launches you into a Frostbite world where things happen very quickly in a max pop of 24 players in a server. There are a decent amount of game modes and there’s even one that has light armored vehicles but a lack of recoil on the weapons, fast spawn timers, and a big collection of small sized maps makes the multi-player feel alot like a UT game. Its definitely a twitch shooter so if you’re not at the top of your game, expect to die frequently and not know what the hell just happened. There are 3 classes that break up players into the noob tube/RPG/sniper roles but overall it’s very much just your standard rifles with the occasional sniper camping spawns and tunnels. Each class has their own set of perks and weapons to unlock but with the small scope of perks, and only 1 weapon unlock per class, it all feels like this was an afterthought that was added in last minute.
The game definitely has a collection of high points that I enjoyed and I still drop into the muliplayer every now and then, but Medal of Honor just seems to be missing something partially awesome, which just makes it fall behind your more competent modern day shooter, which gets me thinking, I really should re-install MW2. Oh, and no unlockable beards for my guys? C’mon EA, totally missed out on what being a Tier 1 operator is all about.

Weekend Update 8/29/10
29 08 2010Friday had ended nicely bringing in a full weekend set to commit to plenty o’ games, and let me tell you, plenty of gaming was done.
First on the list, Mafia 2 rolled out this week and I dug into that hard throughout the week and finally finished it off on Saturday. The game offers a pretty decent storyline that focus’s on a WW2 war hero of Italian descent and decides to join the Mafia when he gets back home to a fictional New York city, or Empire Bay. Alot of Mafia-esque related material was taken from influential Mafia or mob movies but being that I have only seen a few, I couldnt really recognize any big moments in the game that were pulled from a movie or sitcom series. The game wraps things up nicely hitting a key note on the ending of the first game. One thing that I should probably note is that the game is very linear for being an open world game. It kinda feels like the open world was just supposed to serve the purpose of setting the theme and tone for the story, although you can do your standard GTA fare it’s not presented directly to you, and, well, there simply just isn’t enough for you to do besides the main storyline missions.
I followed that up with some Worms: Reloaded which is pretty much just Worms. Theres bazookas, grenades, bananas, and bats. Something probably worth more weight is the new Arma 2: British Armed Forces DLC which came out this weekend. It adds the British Army into Takistan along with their L85 variants and new vehicles and choppers. I played through the British campaign (4 missions) and although it was fairly short, it definitely played well and I think it is more polished than the original stuff that comes with the campaign. Also, you get to hear British dudes gap on the comms so it’s a nice change of atmosphere after hearing alot of broken English. I kinda enjoyed playing through those missions so I plan on downloading some custom missions and giving those a go later on. Anyways that pretty much wraps up the weekend for me. As usual, check out the JTV channel for daily gaming goodness!

Starcraft 2-nizzle all up in my Hizzle, Foshizzle
27 07 2010After getting home from work today and popping in the Starcraft 2 disc, I instantly felt a weird sense of nostalgia when the autorun prompt came up. I had played a little of the MP beta but today would be my real re-entry into the world of Starcraft. The game at it’s core is as Starcraft as you remember it. With that said, there are some substantial changes to some of the units, techs, and buildings, but overall it’s like playing a revamped edition of Starcraft, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s kinda weird how alot of RTS games have tried to re-invent their franchise by adding something drastic or trying to make a new game, whereas Blizzard was just like, “You liked Starcraft? Well here you go.”
It’s still very early and I haven’t even launched into an actual MP game but from the get go I am having a blast playing the campaign. Full VO’s, varied mission layouts, unlockable upgrades, and just the overall tone the game has for the singleplayer is well done. You can tell Blizz poured their hearts into this, just as expected. Oh yeah, I kinda forgot about how regular the $60 price tag feels nowadays until I picked up this game at Best Buy and was like, wait a minute, PC Games cost 60 bucks now? Damn. Oh well.
